Wing Foiling in Lanzarote: The Ultimate Experience for Water Sports Enthusiasts
Lanzarote is known for its stunning natural beauty and pristine beaches, making it a top destination for water sports enthusiasts. One of the most exciting water sports to try in Lanzarote is wing foiling, a relatively new activity that combines elements of windsurfing, kitesurfing, and stand-up paddleboarding.
What is wing foiling, exactly? In a nutshell, it involves using a small handheld sail (known as a "wing") to harness the wind and propel yourself across the water on a foil board. The result is a unique and exhilarating experience that's unlike any other water sport.
Lanzarote is an ideal destination for wing foiling for several reasons. First, the island's consistent trade winds provide excellent conditions for foiling, with wind speeds ranging from 15 to 25 knots on average. Second, the island's warm and sunny climate means you can enjoy wing foiling year-round. And finally, Lanzarote's diverse coastline offers a variety of spots for wing foiling, from sheltered lagoons to open ocean swells.
So, what can you expect when you go wing foiling in Lanzarote? For starters, you'll need to take a few lessons to get the hang of it. While wing foiling isn't necessarily difficult, it does require a bit of coordination and balance. Once you've got the basics down, though, you'll be able to cruise along the water with ease and even catch some waves if you're feeling adventurous.
One of the best things about wing foiling in Lanzarote is the sheer beauty of the island. As you glide across the water, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the coastline and the surrounding volcanic landscape. And when you're not on the water, you can explore Lanzarote's many other attractions, from the Timanfaya National Park to the Cueva de los Verdes lava tube.
Overall, wing foiling in Lanzarote is an unforgettable experience that's not to be missed. Whether you're a seasoned water sports enthusiast or a beginner looking for a new challenge, Lanzarote has everything you need for an amazing wing foiling adventure. So why not book your trip today and see for yourself what all the fuss is about?
LANZAROTE´S WING FOIL SPOTS
The wing foil lessons in Lanzarote will depend on the riding level of each person, but normally this is the plan:
- Beginners: The best place to learn wing foiling in lanzarote is in the Lagoon at La Santa. It is a perfect spot to get started in the sport. It is big enough to sail around and have time on your board, but not too big so you can walk back. There are no currents. There are no waves to unbalance you from your board, and the wing foiling lessons take place in a very safe environment, where you can walk back if you can´t stay upwind, which is normally the case for everybody starting the sport.
- Advanced: If you already can sail back regularly to the spot you started from in flat water but you still need time on your foil you can sail in the lagoon at La Santa, which is perfect to improve your foiling skills and tricks. Or you can start to develop your skills in "flat" Ocean like Playa Honda. Not as flat as the lagoon not as shaky as an exposed open Ocean beach.
-Experts: If you can ride on your own perfectly in the open ocean and you want to ride and enjoy surfing some waves you can go to Famara or Costa T, depending on the wind and swell conditions.
Everybody asks whats is wing foiling? Is it really hat fun? Is it hard? What is Wing foiling? Wing foiling or wind wing or wing surfing is just a simplistic evolution of windsurfing and kitesurfing. We have combined a big windsurf board with a kite carried on our hands and use the wind to sail around. Then we add a hydrofoil under the board to start flying around and make it super fun and versatile.
WING FOILING LEARNING STEPS:
We can separate the learning in two steps:
- THE WING: First we will learn how to use the wing properly so we can sail around (on the beach). Then we will work on our balance on our board, and then we will start sailing around the lagoon with our wing with the objective to control where we go and to return to our starting point
- THE FOIL: We will learn how to be safe on a foil, how to avoid possible injuries, and how is the technique for getting up on foil (and staying there).
FAQS ABOUT WING FOILING
Is wing foiling hard? Wing foiling is not that hard and it is not that easy. We need to put in the time to practice and repeat. Using the appropriate equipment and don’t cut corners (this is very important to learn) is not that bad. In general terms we can say that using the wing and learning to sail around with it on a big board is not that difficult. But again it all depends also of our previous background. The more sports we have done before the better.
Things get a bit more complicated when we start with the foiling part. If you have previously foiled it will be a lit easier to understand than if it is your first time of course. But again with a little practice and good coaching it will be fine.
Is it better than kitesurfing? They are 2 different sports and normally depending on the wind conditions you can do one or the other. But winging is probably more versatile and can be practiced in a lot more situations (due to the fact that you can sail on off shore or gusty conditions). Beaches are also less restrictive for the practice of wing foiling as kite surfing is.
And compared windsurfing? Lots of wind surfers are going into wing foiling because it is a more simple sport. You don´t need as much equipment. It is not as heavy to carry around and you don´t need as much wind as for wind surfing. They are also disciplines that complement of each other depending on the conditions.
WIND SEASONS FOR WING FOILING IN LANZAROTE
The beauty of wing foiling is that we can use any direction of wind and we need much less wind than other wind sports such as kitesurfing or wind surfing. But we still nevertheless need wind to practice our sport, and when we do a trip to practice a wind sport we have the chance of not having wind.
The good news is that the Canary islands get a lot of wind compared to other parts of Europe, and Lanzarote is well know for the amount of windy days per year.
So looking at the data we can say that the best season for coming to Lanzarote looking for wind would be during the Spring and during the Summer. Again, with climate and wind you never know. You can come in the summer and be unlucky and come in Autumn and get really lucky. But it is sure that if there is anywhere where you have chances of getting wind is in Lanzarote. Of course the more time you come the more chances you will have of having wind.
